Maintaining Your Wollongong
Natural Pool
Natural pools require far less maintenance than chlorinated pools. Here's what to expect through Wollongong's seasons.
A mature natural pool on the NSW coast requires approximately 2–4 hours of maintenance per month, with clear seasonal variation. The coastal setting brings specific considerations — salt spray, prevailing winds, and the seasonal transition between the swim and non-swim seasons.
Pre-season (September–October) is the most important maintenance period on the NSW coast. As water temperatures rise above 18°C, biological activity restarts vigorously. Check plant regrowth after winter, clear any accumulated organic matter from the pool floor, and confirm pump operation before the season begins. A pre-season check by your pool's maintenance provider (if used) is worthwhile.
Summer (November–March) requires primarily surface maintenance. NSW coastal winds carry debris from surrounding gardens — regular skimming is the main task. Monitor the regeneration zone plants for health; salt-spray exposure can stress some species on exposed coastal sites. Hot nor'westerly winds increase evaporation rates; monitor water levels more frequently in November–February.
Post-season (April–May) is critical in coastal NSW gardens with deciduous exotic trees. Autumn leaf fall from liquidambars, maples, and ornamental cherries can load the regeneration zone quickly if not managed. Clear leaves regularly and reduce pump run-time as temperatures drop.
