Maintaining Your Canberra
Natural Pool
Natural pools require far less maintenance than chlorinated pools. Here's what to expect through Canberra's seasons.
Canberra natural pools require the most seasonally-aware maintenance approach in Australia, but the total time commitment is still modest at around 2–4 hours per month. The cold winters and warm dry summers create a pronounced seasonal cycle that experienced Canberra builders design for from the outset.
Spring (September–November) is the most important maintenance period in Canberra. As temperatures rise above 15°C, the biological system reactivates rapidly. Increase pump run-times incrementally (start at 6 hours/day in September, progress to 10–12 hours by November). Check that native plants are re-emerging — the Canberra tablelands species are reliably dormant in winter but should be showing growth by mid-September. Clear any organic matter that accumulated during winter before the swim season begins.
Summer (November–March) maintenance is minimal despite Canberra's heat. The biological system is fully operational, and the dry summer air reduces algae pressure significantly. Skim surfaces regularly. Canberra's summer thunderstorms can bring heavy debris input — clear after each significant storm. Top up water levels as Canberra's summer is genuinely dry.
Autumn and winter preparation is critical in Canberra. In April–May, reduce pump run-times progressively. Check that above-ground plumbing is protected against the coming frosts. Remove any heavy leaf fall (Canberra's established suburbs have many deciduous exotic trees). By June, run the pump on a frost-prevention cycle (brief overnight runs to prevent pipe freezing) rather than for biological filtration.
